The EU Electronic Commerce Directive
2002 became law in the UK on August 28th. This does require websites to show
more information on ownership, operation and contact details.
The Directive also seeks to restrict
'Spam' (Unsolicited Commercial Email) originating in the EU. However, during
the consultation period most protection was lobbied out of
existance.
Basically you can now spam anyone as
long as you put in a 'unsubscribe' option, clear details of who you are and
allow it to be filterble by yourself or your ISP. Unfortuneately the Directive
does not indicate how this is to be done and so according to our Trading
Officer you have no option to receive what they choose to send.
